The village of Kinawley and it's surrounding district takes it's name from Cill Naile meaning Church of Naile.

The village nestles within the north end of a valley between the Cuilcagh-Greenan-Benaughlin mountain range on one side and Slieve Rushen-Molly mountain range on the other. The north side of the area touches part of Lough Erne.

The area has a wealth of places of great natural beauty. It is an area, which can be explored at one's own pace.

The area contains two scenic drives namely Doon Scenic Route and Gortalughany Scenic Route, both of which showcase the surrounding mountains and hills as well as providing great views over the surrounding valleys. It is also an attractive area to walkers and cyclists, including within its boundary, the Ulster Way and the Kingfisher Cycle Trail.
